Why To Start Training Jiu Jitsu
1. It's never to late to learn!
I truly believe children is always happy cos they're always learning something new. Life is never boring but otherwise, always exciting! Why once we grow old, we put so many barriers onto our learning process when regarding to new things? The famous excuse: - "I'm too old for that...". Well, sure that starting something younger makes life easier but not starting at all would never help make it worth it - "Better late than never, right?". Jiu-Jitsu is definitely an endless learning process what makes it truly healthy not only for the body but for the mind. Practitioners work their mental aspect in many different keeping mind and body linked and actively improving. Remember: "Learning is the only thing the mind never exhausts, never fears, and never regrets." (Leonardo da Vinci)
2. Great for Self-Defense!
Jiu Jitsu is well known as one of the most effective martial arts / combative sports for one-on-one self-defense. Proof of that is it's effectiveness in all MMA tournaments worldwide. It's perfectly adapted to all genders, body types and ages. It's a martial art where the smaller and less athletic individual can defend themselves against larger and stronger assailants. It relies on the usage of efficient techniques - joint locks, choke holds and body control - applying the principle of leverage over strength. It's techniques are easily adapted to be applied in a street fight situation.
3. Get fitter, get healthier!
Another great thing about Jiu Jitsu is that despite all above benefits mentioned, it's an unbelievable form of workout that incorporates every part of your body. Practitioners start understanding about body parts and muscles they've never even knew they had before. Traditional training sessions usually involve warm-ups, technique / drills and friendly sparring (aka rolling). Sessions can be easily adapted to every single participant so no one requires to have previous sports' experience or even a pre-determined minimum fitness level. It's a modality that ever single person can follow and progress accordingly to their own individuality.
4. Make new friends!
Despite being an individual sport, Jiu Jitsu practitioners depend on their training partners for their learning process and progress. Jiu Jitsu is a sport where we place tremendous confidence in our training partners and inevitably make new and great friends who will eventually become our tatami brothers. We usually mention Jiu Jitsu as the individual sport more collective that exists.
5. Relieve Stress!
Life is very stressful with work, bills, schools, family, and traffic to name a few. Stress can trigger many physical and mental health issues including headaches, high blood pressure, heart problems, diabetes, skin conditions, asthma, arthritis, depression, and anxiety. Training in Jiu Jitsu causes many chemical reactions in the body that help relieve stress, forget about our problems in life, and feel more satisfied and positive about life.
6. Learn Humility!
Any person becomes more humble when leaving his comfort zone, stepping into a new environment and starting something until then completely unknown. Starting as a new white belt, it will be a very overwhelming experience where you will be learning and practicing body movements and concepts that will challenge you both physically and mentally. There will be times where you will be lost and feel inadequate. Yet, at the same time, the right coaches and training partners who have gone through the same experiences will be helping you learn in a very patient manner. There will be experiences along your journey that will teach you very practical human lessons on being kind, humble, patient, empathetic, and nurturing that you can apply to all aspects of your life.
7. Build Confidence!
The combination of many of the points above including learning something new, meeting new people, becoming more humble, testing your comfort zone, and learning to deal with stress are all parts of a recipe for building your self-confidence. It's well known that Martial Arts do that this to individuals but it's better known that Jiu Jitsu does it in a different way... maybe a more solid way.
8. Why not?!
Well, we could keep numbering many other reasons or even trying to convince everyone to step into a Jiu Jitsu School and start learning today. We've seen fat people becoming fit, heavy smokers quit smoking completely, couch potatoes becoming gym's freaks. Anyway, this first step depends entirely on the person itself.
If you can make a positive change for your life today, why not?.
